I don't know about a 56 but on my stock 57 with single exhaust that wraps around front of motor, I had to drop the exhaust, remove starter to get to a couple bolts. Big Block Dave and myself changed the oil pan gasket in my 70 SS454 with the motor lifted up to where the top of the intake was level with the firewall.I used a once piece gasket and glued it to the oil pan and used studs at the corners of the pan.if it were me, id drain the oil, drop the pan as far as you can, clean the mounting surfaces, get some good oil resistant sealant and make a nice fat bead on the flange. wait a few mins for it to skin over and then tighten it back up in a star pattern.
